Located in Utica, NY and housed in the photography studios of Pratt Munson, Study Hall seeks an alternative approach to photographic education by taking students beyond the screen and directly to the printed image of artists being discussed in their classes. We’re committed to dismantling hierarchies that have historically been present within traditional white wall spaces. By bringing the artists and their work to where students are developing their own studio practices, the exhibiting artists become real people and immediately accessible and relatable. Exhibitions are presented for an entire semester and the work represents a wide breadth of photographic voices and practices. We’re committed to exhibiting work that speaks directly to the diverse student body of Pratt Munson by amplifying the work of historically marginalized voices within the photographic community.
All works are produced on site and prints are subsequently destroyed at exhibition close. This system allows artists to contribute prints at no expense and allows us to exhibit works that may not otherwise be available for this setting. The model of Study Hall is simple and began as a pedagogical experiment. We encourage other institutions to adapt our format to your own curriculum and programming.
Study Hall was founded by Sarah Smith, Associate Professor of Photography, and generously supported by Munson and Pratt Munson
Thank you to all of the artists who kindly loaned us their work.
