All We Carry
All We Carry was developed alongside our studies of the history of photography and began as a step toward reconsidering the canon typically included in these courses. Using the archive of interviews built by Strange Fire collective, whose mission is to amplify voices from underrepresented communities in the art world, we chose artists making work in direct response to their own lives and interpersonal relationships.
As a means to critically engage with culture, these artists produce works that exist as both projects of reclamation and declarations of existence. Images included in this exhibition speak to the artists’ own lived experience through a visual language that spans the overtly autobiographical to larger conversations about politics and culture.
In this moment that has forced so many of us into different forms of isolation, the works included in this exhibition speak to our shared desire for connection. These connections might present themselves in the work as deeper explorations of self, family history, or collective memory.
