Primary Sources
History may appear to some as a series of facts, dates, and events, but even our best access, given to us through the study of primary sources, readily points to the subjective nature of authorship and, by extension, the process of interpretation. Primary Sources brings together the work of ten lens-based artists, all of whom are intimately connected to their photographic subjects. Some of the works included in the exhibition were made through the photographing of carefully constructed tableaus while others depict the private lives and intimate acts of solitary figures. Regardless of the approach or the particulars of each artist’s studio practice, the exhibited works highlight the photographer as both maker and active participant in the photographic process.
